Melbourne Photography Workshops: Master the Light
Are you stuck shooting on “Auto”? Do you want to master studio strobes and create high-end portraits? Crown Visual Studio provides the most hands-on Melbourne photography workshops for photographers of all levels.
Unlike online courses, we put a camera in your hand and give you something real to photograph: each other in the beginner course, a professional model in the two studio lighting courses. You will learn by doing, not just watching.
Course 1: Photography Course for Beginners – Get Off Auto
Three hours, any camera, and you leave shooting in manual.
Most people buy a decent camera and spend the next year on Auto. This course fixes that in one Saturday morning. We teach the three controls that decide every photograph, then you use them: on a still-life table by the window, and on each other on the studio backdrop. You photograph real people, not a vase, and you go home with your own frames.
Cost: $150.
When: Second and fourth Saturday of the month, 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM. Pick your Saturday on the course calendar.
Duration: 3 hours. Eight people maximum. Runs with two or more; we never cancel for numbers.
Bring: any camera with a manual mode, or use one of our studio cameras at no extra cost.
What You Learn:
Shutter, aperture and ISO: shown live on the big screen, then practised: freezing motion, blurring it on purpose, throwing a background out of focus.
Getting sharp: focus modes, focal length, white balance, RAW versus JPEG, and reading the histogram.
Reading light: window light and a reflector, then one studio light switched on so you see where Course 2 goes.
Portraits in pairs: composition, headroom and eye contact, directing a person, and a group photo to finish.
Review and next steps: everyone’s best frames on screen, a ten-minute phone-editing demo, and a one-page cheat sheet to take home.
Ready for studio lights afterwards? Course 2 runs on the first and third Saturday.
Course 2: Studio Lighting Course – One Light, One Model
Essential theory & advanced single-strobe techniques.
This 3-hour course focuses on mastering the most important light in the studio: the Key Light. We dive deep into the physics of light so you can control shadows and mood with just one strobe.
Cost: $180.
When: First and third Saturday of the month, 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM. Dates: 17 October; 21 November; 5 and 19 December; 16 and 30 January; 6 February. Book on the course calendar.
Includes: Tuition + Professional Model for your portfolio. Four students maximum.
Curriculum:
Inverse Square Law: The secret to controlling light fall-off.
Background Control: How to turn a white wall grey or black using only light positioning.
Lighting Patterns: Master the classics (Rembrandt, Butterfly, Split, and Loop).
Hard vs. Soft Light: Understanding modifiers and shadow density.
Course 3: Advanced Studio Lighting Course – Multi-Light and Gels
Creative cinematic lighting using 2, 3, or 4 lights.
Once you have mastered the fundamentals, Course 3 introduces the drama. We move into complex Multi-Strobe Setups to create commercial, fashion, and cinematic looks.
Cost: $200.
When: Last Sunday of the month, 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM. Dates: 25 October; 29 November; 13 December; 31 January; 28 February. Four students maximum. Book on the course calendar.
Curriculum:
2 & 3 Light Setups: Balancing Key, Fill, and Rim lights.
Rim & Kicker Lights: Creating separation and edge highlights for a “3D” look.
Clamshell Lighting: The ultimate “Beauty” setup for flawless skin.
Gels & Color: Using colored gels for creative impact.
Why Choose Crown Visual Workshops?
1. Technical Mastery We don’t just show you “settings”; we teach you the specific physics of light. You will understand exactly why a light behaves the way it does, so you can replicate the results in any studio environment.
2. Portfolio Building You don’t just leave with knowledge, you leave with photographs. We book an agency-standard model for every advanced workshop, and your images from the session are sent to you after class, yours to keep and use in your portfolio.
3. Small Class Sizes Four Students Maximum — Both advanced workshops are capped at four people. That is the whole design: you spend the three hours behind your own camera with the instructor and the model, not watching a demonstration from the back of a room.
